May 1st is here, and that means it is time to celebrate National Purebred Dog Day (or NPDD for short, #NPDD)! National Purebred Dog Day was created in 2013 by writer and Puli fancier, Susi Szeremy, to celebrate the heritage and diversity of the purebred dog. Good Dog and Ms. Szeremy believe that all dogs should be celebrated, whatever their ancestry, but NPDD is an opportunity to pay homage to the purpose-bred dog and the predictability of its breed, as Ms. Szeremy explains. Check outthis videoto learn more about NPDD!
We were lucky enough to chat with Ms. Szeremy and learn all about why she founded NPDD! Ms. Szeremy hopes NPDD is not only a chance to celebrate the heritage, diversity, and predictability of the purebred dog, but also a chance to celebrate how important purebred dogs are in human history and cultures. She created NPDD to celebrate the purebred dog in all its forms. It is also a chance to celebrate purebred, preservation breeders for their contributions to society and hard work preserving the breeds we all know and love and creating the next generation of healthy, well-adjusted dogs.
At a young age, Ms. Szeremy saw firsthand the impact a purebred dog could have. “My mother had a Puli growing up in Hungary who they sadly lost in a bombing. I searched for the right Puli preservation breeder for years, and when I finally found one and brought the pup to my mother, she buried her face in the dog and wept. This helped Ms. Szeremy understand that purebred dogs can be etched in personal and cultural history. Ms. Szeremy wishes people could see that when a purebred dog is bred lovingly, carefully, and with knowledge and a plan, that dog can be a wonderful companion for life!
